A STUDY ON PERIODONTAL DISEASE IN SECONDARY SCHOOL CHILDREN IN QUEPHONG, NGHEAN 2016

Abstract

Objectives: Determining the rate of inflammation around teeth, tooth decay, gingivitis and treatment needs in secondary school students in Quephong district, Nghean province in 2016.


Subjects and methods: A descriptive study was conducted on 653 students at three secondary schools in Que Phong district, Nghe An province.


Results and con clusions: Type I on the right: 58.7%, on the left: 56.5%; Type II on the right: 26.2%, on the left: 28.8%; Type 3 on the right: 12.9%, on the left 11.5%. Anterior open bite occurred in 6.0% of the students while posterior open bite existed in 4.6% of the students. 16.8% of the students suffered from anterior crossbite and 2.5% had posterior crossbite. The prevalence of overbite and deep bite was 82.5% and 82.1% re spectively. Those students with dental plaque took 73.4%, including Grade I (62.2%), Grade II (16.0%) and Grade II (21.8%). The overall prevalence of Fluor infection was 33.2% (217/653), in which 84.8% were severely infected; 7.8% were moderate infections and 7.4% were mild. The mildest form of periodontal disease (Type I) accounted for the highest percentage (67.4%), followed by Type II (28.9%), and Type III (3.7%). Dental caries occurred in 19.7% (129/653) of the studied students. Of 653 students, 384 (58.8%) students needed immediate treatment; 214 (32.8%) students needed preventive treatment, 52 (8.0%) students did not need treatment, and 3 (0.5%) students needed emergency treatment
