Abstract

Objectives: 1. Describe the clinical characteristics of recurrent otitis media in children at the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases. 2. Identify some risk factors for recurrent otitis media with effusion in children.

Subjects and methods: Prospective descriptive study on 45 cases diagnosed with recurrent otitis media with effusion at the Department of Examination of the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases from January 2023 to July 2023.

Results and conclusions: The average age is 2.64 ± 1.83, the youngest is 12 months, the oldest is 9 years old, the ratio of male children is higher than female children (62.20 and 37.80). Common clinical symptoms are nasal discharge 88.89%, ear discharge 46.67%. Children with disease in both ears have a rate of: 88.89%, acute rhinosinusitis: 77.78%, overdeveloped adenoids: 44.44%, with overdeveloped Amydales stage 3: 42.23%. The highest duration of illness before admission is 1 week with a rate of 60%, the maximum duration of each otitis media with effusion is 2 weeks with a rate of 62.22%. The number of recurrences of otitis media with effusion in children is highest after 2 weeks: 37.78%.
