Abstract

Objectives: Describe the characteristics of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and etiologies of bacterial meningitis in patients treated in the emergency department - National hospital for tropical diseases.


Subjects and methods: 42 patients were diagnosed with bacterial meningitis by methods: staining Gram, bacterial culture and polymerase chain, treated in the emergency department of national hospital for tropical diseases from 1/2013 to 12/2014. Descriptive and retrospective cross-sectional study.


Results: cerebrospinal fluid characteristics: cloudy cerebrospinal fluid was 94.4%, elevated cerebrospinal fluid pressure was 92.1%, the median value of protein was 3.3 g/l, the median value of CSF cells was 1774/mm3; etiologies of bacterial meningitis: Gram-positive cocci 88.1%, S. suis 84.6%, A. baumannii 5.13%, Listeria 5.13%, K. pneumonia 2.6%, S. pneumoniae 2.6%.
