CLINICOEPIDEMIOLOGIC CHARACTERISTICS OF MURINE TYPHUS IN VIETNAM

Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the clinicoepidemiologic characteristics of Murine typhus in Vietnam.


Subjects and methods: Descriptive cross - sectional study on patients with fever and positive realtime PCR result for R. typhi at different research areas from 8 Vietnamese ecological regions throughout the period from June 2018 to June 2019.


Results: 56 patients were confirmed to be infected with R.typhi in all ecoregions with the highest proportion of Hanoi (23 cases) and Thainguyen (8 cases). R. typhi infection was found in all the age groups from children to the elderly of which, the age group of 31 - 45 got the highest propotion, male accounted for higher rate than female (62.5% to 37.5%), from urban to rural, delta, mountainous and coastal areas with different professions and scattered throughout the year. Patients who have been treated in cottage hospital normally could not be diagnosed.


Conclusion: Murine typhus disease is a common disease in Vietnam at many ages, many geographical areas and different professions.
