Abstract
Objectives: to describe the epidemiological, clinical, subclinical characteristics and comment on treatment results of malaria patients treated at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases(NHTD) from 1/2017 – 6/2022.
Subjects and methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study combining retrospective and prospective 65 patients with malaria disease treated at NHTD.
Results and conclusions: The parasite etiology was mainly identified as P.falciparum (87.7%), P.vivax (10.8%) and P.malariae (1.5%), no co-infection of P.ovale, P.knowlesi. The source of infection with parasites in the study mainly came from other countries (91.8%). Especially African countries (84.6%), in Vietnam (9.2%). The rate of malaria without complications is 89.2%, with complications is 10.8%. Clinical features: fever (100%), mucosal skin manifestations (blue skin, pale mucous membranes, yellow or congestion) (69%), splenomegaly (17.2 %), hepatomegaly (8.6%), gastrointestinal manifestations (24.1%), typical malarial episodes 81%. Malaria is complicated by fever (100%), mucosal manifestations such as (100%), hepatomegaly (80%), neurological manifestations (57.2%), respiratory manifestations (42.9%), digestive manifestations (42.9%). ) and kidney damage (71.4%), typical malarial episodes are 85.7%. The major parasite density <100,000 parasites/ml was 93.1% and 85.7%, respectively. Treatment results The cure rate is 100% for uncomplicated malaria and 85.7% for complicated malaria. The mean duration of treatment for uncomplicated and complicated malaria was 7.01 ± 3.01 days and 11.7 ± 9.2 days. Time to recover from fever is 4 days, malaria parasite clearance time was mainly after 4 days. (88%).
