KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE OF REGULAR HAND HYGIENE OF MEDICAL STAFFS AT VINH MEDICAL UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN 2021

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to describe the knowledge and practice of medical staffs on routine hand hygiene at Vinh Medical University Hospital in 2021.


Subjects and Methods: Medical staffs directly take care of patients at clinical departments of Vinh Medical University Hospital in 2021. A cross-sectional descriptive study with analysis.


 Results: 100% of medical staffs had correct knowledge about 5 times to wash hands regularly. 98.9% of study subjects had correct knowledge about the role of correct routine hand hygiene in reducing the risk of infection for patients and themselves. 75.9% of medical staffs said that wearing clean gloves is not a substitute for hand washing, 96.6% of participants understood that routine hand hygiene before examination had a role to protect the patient and 74.7% of them said that this action also played a role in protecting healthcare workers. However, there were 74.2% of medical staffs who did not properly understand the effect of routine hand hygiene on the bacteria residing on the skin of the hands. The proportion of healthcare workers adhering to routine hand hygiene practices across all observed opportunities was 40.4%. The percentage of medical staffs who practice correct and sufficient hand hygiene steps has gradually decreased from step 1 (65.1%) to step 6 (13.1%).


Conclusion: General knowledge of routine hand hygiene among hospital staff at Vinh Medical University was not high. Compliance with routine hand hygiene practices of healthcare workers was relatively low. The rate of correct and sufficient practice of routine hand hygiene steps gradually decreased from step 1 to step 6.
