Abstract

Objectives: Describe the current status of rabies vaccination at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases from 2020 - 2022.

Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study, the number of patients receiving rabies exposure prophylaxis at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in the period 2020 - 2022. Collected retrospective data from the Vaccination Department of the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

Results and conclusions: In the 3-year period from 2020 - 2022, there were a total of 2,615 cases of rabies vaccination, of which the male/female ratio: 1.2/1; the common age group was 24 - 49 years old, accounting for 39.1%; 74.5% were exposed from dogs. Wound locations are common in hands and feet 88.8%, grade III wounds accounted for 93%. The majority of people go for prophylactic vaccination soon after exposure < 10 days, accounting for 92.2%, the rest ≥ 10 days, accounting for 7.8%. The most common local reaction after injection is pain with the rate of 16.9%. Other adverse reactions after injection were all at a very low rate (including local reactions and systemic reactions), no patients died after vaccination. During the peak months of the COVID-19 pandemic with complicated developments, the rate of preventive vaccination dropped to the lowest level in periods.
