Abstract

Objectives: To characterize some clinical and subclinical features in patients with Epstein-Barr virus infection in the bone marrow.
Subjects and methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study on 71 patients with positive PCR - EBV test results in bone marrow fluid at the Center for Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Bach Mai Hospital from January 2023 to January 2024.
Results: The results were more common in patients over 60 years of age and more common in immunocompromised patients with clinical symptoms of HLH (60.6%), fever (59.2%), splenomegaly (38%) and pneumonia 38%. In terms of total peripheral blood cell analysis, up to 83.1% of patients with anemia, in the bone marrow, 100% of patients had hyperphagocytosis, 74.6% showed signs of phagocytosis and 64.3% had hyperlymphocyte.
Conclusions: Patients with EBV are found in many specialties, especially in patients with immunodeficiency of 19.7%, with common clinical symptoms of fever (59.2%), splenomegaly (39.4%) and possible severe complications such as pneumonia (38%), HLH (60.6%).
