CHEST X-RAY AND COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY FEATURES OF COVID-19 PNEUMONIA
Main Article Content
Abstract
The diagnosis of infection with SARS-CoV-2 is microbiological test RT-PCR but imaging techniques play an important role in supporting the diagnosis, grading the severity of disease, detecting complications and evaluating the response to treatment.
Chest Computed Tomography (CT) findings is more sensitive than RT-PCR and plain chest X-rays, but lower specificity than RT-PCR results. It is important to realize that chest CT is not the standard for the diagnosis of COVID-19, but its findings help suggest the diagnosis in the appropriate setting with clinical symptoms and epidemiologic history.
The most common radiologic findings in COVID-19 are ground-glass opacities, consolidations, crazy-paving pattern, dilation of vessels, reversed Halo sign …which are typically bilateral, peripheral, and located primarily in the lower fields. Most common complications are Acute respiratoty distress syndrome (ARDS), pulmonary embolism, superimposed pneumonia, heart failure.
