PREVALENCE OF DEPRESSION SYMPTOMS AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS AMONG HIV/AIDS PATIENS UNDER ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPY TREATMENT AT BACHMAI HOSPITAL IN 2019

Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to describe the prevalence of depression and determine associated factors among HIV/AIDS patients under ARV treatment at Center for Tropical Diseases, Bachmai Hospital in 2019.
Subjects and methods: We conducted a cross - sectional study at study site and data was collected by direct interview.
Results: A total of 120 patients were enrolled to study with the proportion of male patients was 55.8%. Using PHQ - 9 assessment tool, we estimated the prevalence of depression among participants was 11.7% (mild symptoms was 7.5%; moderate was 3.3% and severe was 0.8%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that patients who had history of drug injection or had low/moderate social support were more likely to have depression than those who had never used drugs or had high social supporting. Demographic factors included gender, age, as well as tobacco smoking and alcohol dependence did not show a significant association with depression among participants.
Conclusion: Our findings suggested that counseling services and integration of treatment for mental disorders including depression is necessary to improve the quality of treatment and quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS.
