RESULTS OF USING ANTIRETROVIRAL DRUGS FOR PREVENTING HIV AMONG THOSE AT RISK IN CANTHO GENERAL HOSPITAL YEAR (2014 - 2016)

Abstract

Introduction: In order to contribute to the reduction of HIV prevalence, post-exposure prophylaxis at the Cantho General Hospital is required.


Objectives: (1) Determine the compliance rate for HIV exposure in accident victims. (2) Evaluate the effectiveness of ARV prophylaxis after 3 months.


Subjects and Methods: Patients were evaluated for HIV exposure and assigned prophylactic treatment with 3 ARVs: TDF + 3TC + EFV, TDF + 3TC + LPV/r from 2014 to 2016. Retrospective method.


Results: Rate of male/female: 1/2, age: 24 - 26: 32.5%, trainees: 42%. Hospital nurse: 22%. Syringe needles, needles: 61.3% of which cover the needle with two hands: 25.8%. Adherence to correct wound treatment: 77.5%. All persons exposed to the test were 100% negative for HIV. Exposure to HIV testing results in: 38.7% with HIV(+), 32.3% with HIV(-), and 29% with unknown HIV status of the exposed person. Good adherence to ARV prophylaxis for 28 days: 87%, ARV for ≥ 20 days to < 28 days: 13%. Results after 3 months HIV negative. Drug - related adverse events: Fatigue: 51.8%, headache: 22.8%, mild decrease in red blood cell count: 6.4%, liver function increase with AST: 3.3% and ALT increased: 6.5%. Conclusion: Adherence to correct wound care: 77.5% and full 28 days of ARV regimens were 87%. Antiretroviral ARV prophylaxis was 100% negative for HIV.
